Are you missing several teeth in a row or have significant gaps in your smile? Not only can this feel frustrating or embarrassing, but it can also impact how you eat, speak, and care for your oral health. Fortunately, there are several ways you can restore your smile, two treatments being partial dentures and dental bridges. Although these options address similar issues, they do come with certain essential distinctions. So, how do you know which to choose? Read on to learn the difference between partial dentures and dental bridges!

Rebuilding Missing Teeth with Partial Dentures

A partial denture is a dental prosthetic that involves a gum-colored base and multiple replacement teeth. The pearly whites will typically be constructed out of porcelain or acrylic which will rest on a foundation made of the latter material. The metal clasps built into the denture will attach to adjacent, healthy teeth to support the restoration. While a partial denture is durable and reliable, you can also easily remove it during your oral hygiene routine.

Closing a Gap in Your Smile with a Dental Bridge

Dental bridges usually consist of two dental crowns that are connected by a “bridge.” If you’re missing a consecutive number of teeth, this restoration can rest upon the abutment teeth on either side of the gap. This will require preparation, which will involve removing a small layer of enamel to make room for the dental bridge. Afterward, your dentist will bond the dental crowns atop the prepared teeth with a special cement to create a fully restored smile. This restoration option is designed to remain in your mouth permanently, so you shouldn’t be able to remove it.

Which Dental Treatment is Best for Your Smile?

The best way to determine which of the two treatments is right for you is by scheduling an initial consultation with your dental team. Your dentist will thoroughly assess your specific situation before recommending the proper method to restore your smile. A partial denture may be ideal if you have three or more missing teeth, or if you might be prone to further tooth loss later on. This restoration may also require replacements after 5-7 years. On the other hand, a dental bridge may be best if you need to restore one or two missing teeth, and it can last 10 years or more with proper care.

Speak with your dentist if you’re interested in either partial dentures or a dental bridge. They’ll be more than happy to help restore your teeth so that you can enjoy eating, talking, and smiling comfortably again!
