Dental implants continue to gain popularity as the ideal method for replacing lost teeth because of the unique advantages they provide. They’re the only restoration that’s directly inserted into your jawbone for added strength and resiliency. If you’re feeling nervous about your upcoming surgery, however, you’re not alone. Many patients get anxious and want to know as much about it to try to soothe their frayed nerves.

One common inquiry is about how long the procedure typically takes. If you’re looking for some well-deserved peace of mind then continue reading to find the answer!

How Long Does It Take to Place Dental Implants?

There is no single answer to this question because it depends on your unique circumstances. There are a variety of factors that can impact the overall timeline. For example, if it’s discovered that you need a bone graft to bulk up your jawbone to be able to support dental implants, then you’ll have to wait 3 to 6 months to fully recover before proceeding.

The surgery itself typically takes 1 to 2 hours, although it can depend on a few different factors such as:

  • The number of implants required. If you need several artificial teeth, your procedure will take longer than someone who only needs one.
  • Whether you need teeth extracted. If you’re having teeth removed as part of the process, this will add additional time or might require more than one appointment.
  • Your recovery speed. How quickly your bone fuses with the dental implant can impact when your dentist can place your final restoration.

How Long Does Dental Implant Recovery Take?

Dental implants are placed in stages, and you’ll need to take time to heal in between them. The first step is surgically placing a pole in the socket left behind by your missing tooth. Once your dentist has inserted this titanium support rod into your jawbone, it can take 3+ months for the two to fuse in a process called osseointegration. It’s worth the wait, though, because it ensures that your dental implants are firmly planted and more likely to be successful.

Then, you’ll need to visit your dentist again so they can place the abutment, which is the link between the metal post and your artificial teeth. You may have to wait two weeks after this procedure for your gums to mend themselves and then you’ll have one last appointment to place your final restoration (usually a dental crown).

This is the general timeline you can expect from a dental implant procedure, but you may require more or less time depending on your oral condition. Your dentist will be able to give you a more accurate estimate when you consult with them about your procedure. Soon, it’ll be behind you and your patience will have paid off with a beautifully refurbished smile!
